Curiosity is defined as a desire to know or learn – an internal drive to discover and understand rather than simply obtain answers. Here are six strategies for maintaining curiosity throughout life.
1. Think Like a Reporter
Use the six W’s (Who, What, Where, When, Why, How) to ask meaningful questions. Seek understanding beyond surface-level answers. The best questions lead to deeper questions, and that’s where real learning happens.
2. Read Consistently
Establish annual reading goals. I aimed to read 30 books in 2017. Good books open doors to new ideas, new perspectives, and new questions. Revisit meaningful books periodically – you’ll find something new each time.
3. Create a Learning List
Identify 3-5 skills or subjects you want to learn. Leverage online education when bored or seeking growth. The opportunities to learn have never been more accessible or affordable.
4. Listen More Than Speaking
Approach conversations with curiosity rather than a desire to be heard. This builds stronger relationships and demonstrates genuine interest in others. You learn far more by listening than by talking.
5. Embrace Discomfort
Pursue unfamiliar experiences and adventures. A transformative four-week trip to Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji yielded unexpected discoveries that I never would have found staying in my comfort zone.
6. Overcome Fear
Curiosity is a function of overcoming fear – fear of being wrong, fear of looking foolish, fear of being different. The curious mind pushes past these fears because the desire to understand is stronger than the desire to be comfortable.
Life centers on continuous learning, and that’s achievable only through sustained curiosity. Stay curious, keep asking questions, and never stop exploring.
This post is part of a series of letters to my kids. My goal is to reflect on and capture as many life lessons as possible.
