Life lessons on goals

According to a Harvard study, only 3% of Americans write down their goals -- and they are 30 times more successful than those without goals. Here's why goal-setting works.

Goal-setting is unavoidable in life, and it often happens unconsciously. But intentional goal-setting is one of the most powerful tools available to anyone.

The Golf Analogy

Golf illustrates strategic goal-setting perfectly. You work backward from the desired outcome to plan each shot, positioning yourself for success one step at a time. Each decision builds on the last, and the end result depends on the quality of every choice along the way.

Our Experience

Early in our marriage, your mother and I created a written list of 10-year goals. Remarkably, we achieved all of our objectives in half the time. Writing them down made them real and gave us something concrete to work toward together.

The Statistics

According to a Harvard study, 83% of Americans lack goals, and only 3% write them down. Those with written goals are 30 times more successful than those without – 10 times for having goals, and 3 times more for writing them down.

The Power of Writing

Writing goals forces deeper thinking. It enables visualization of success and provides accountability through daily review. There’s something about putting pen to paper that transforms a vague wish into a concrete plan.

As Antoine de Saint-Exupery said, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.”

Values First

Before setting goals, define your personal values to ensure alignment. Goals built on a foundation of clear values are more meaningful and more likely to be pursued with passion.

Practical Benefits

Goals control spending habits, create shared family experiences, and inspire exceeding expectations. I exceeded both my writing and golf targets this year because I wrote them down and reviewed them regularly.

The Bottom Line

Capture your dreams with deadlines. Write them down. Review them daily. The transformative power of written goals is backed by both research and personal experience. Don’t let another year pass with your dreams living only in your head.

This post is part of a series of letters to my kids. My goal is to reflect on and capture as many life lessons as possible.

Every week you wait, the gap widens.
